GypZbilly delivers a high-energy blend of American roots music for dancing, listening, and lively gatherings. Mixing swing, blues, rockabilly, reggae, folk, and Caribbean rhythms, the band creates an upbeat acoustic sound that feels both timeless and fresh.
Originally conceived by Kevin "String" Smith in 2020, the project was created to explore the American back-beat across decades and styles. Today, the repertoire includes a growing selection of StringSmith original material alongside classic influences inspired by artists like Louis Jordan, Django Reinhardt, and Ry Cooder.
Stir in longtime friend and musical brother Lou Davis expanding the sonic palette with sax, tuba, harmonica, and guitar, creating a unique contrapuntal interplay of musical lines and rich vocal harmonies. The tuba bass adds a distinctive and playful dimension to the band’s sound.
Punch it up with Dave Grout, Diana Harold, and Jerry Davis (Lou’s brother), who bring bass, drums, and keyboards when the ensemble expands for larger stages. Past collaborators include Kyle Murray, Carolyn Dufrane, and Pete Toigo.
Known for engaging live performances, GypZbilly specializes in providing the perfect soundtrack for swing dances, festivals, and community events—music with a strong groove, warm and approachable. Their mission is simple: honor the roots of American music while keeping the party moving.
